The EU helps to create the first climate neutral city in Belarus

The Belarus city of Braslau is to become the first climate neutral municipality in the country. Thanks to an EU-funded project, the local authorities and an NGO have installed five new lighting devices on solar panels and replaced 54 sodium lamps with light-emitting diode (LED) lamps in the historical part of the city.

According to the EU Delegation to Belarus, such transformations will help save energy, as each sodium lamp consumed 150 watts of electricity per hour, while the newly installed LED lamps consume only 53 per hour. This means that the replacement of 54 street lamps in Braslaŭ alone will save an estimated 11,731 kilowatt hours per year. This will also reduce CO2 emissions by 10,347 tonnes per year.
