Developed in partnership with the Snake Island Institute and StrategEast, Ukraine’s Defense Tech Landscape: By the Numbers Report provides a comprehensive overview of the rapid evolution of Ukraine’s private defense technology sector, tracing its transformation into one of the world’s most dynamic innovation ecosystems. The report highlights the sector’s unprecedented growth in scale and capacity, marked by a sharp increase in the number of companies, industrial output, and investment flows driven by the demands of full-scale warfare. Drawing on open-source data, industry financial reports, and investment tracking, the report maps the ecosystem’s maturation from small-scale assembly to structured industrial production. The report provides a detailed perspective on key segments, including aerial, ground, and naval systems, alongside the expanding role of domestic component manufacturing and advanced software integration.
In addition to assessing current achievements, the report outlines key trends defining the sector’s trajectory, including the growing dominance of UAV technologies, the emergence of cost-efficient asymmetric solutions, the expansion of international industrial partnerships, and the development of vertically integrated production capabilities. The report explores the transition from early-stage angel investment to institutional venture capital, the role of innovative procurement mechanisms and the increasing localization of supply chains aimed at strengthening resilience and reducing external dependencies. Particular attention is given to the feedback loop between frontline deployment and real-time R&D, where battlefield insights directly inform technological development.
The Ukraine’s Defense Tech Landscape: By the Numbers Report is developed as part of the U.S.-Ukraine Tech Partnership Initiative that aims to deepen cooperation between the Ukrainian tech sector and the U.S., foster business partnerships, attract investments, and contribute to Ukraine’s broader economic recovery.
